Extremist groups provide a stipend to live on, health treatment for the recruit’s family, status within the community and a sense of purpose. Extremists find a ready and willing audience in regions where the government is ineffectual and corrupt and pays little attention to the local conditions, with little or no service delivery.

Major David Katz completed his National Service in 1990. He has served in the reserves for 30 years and is currently a member of the Andrew Mlangeni Regiment. He completed his B Com and B Acc at Wits, becoming a Chartered Accountant in 1985. He has obtained a Masters Degree in Military History (Cum Laude) at Stellenbosch University through the Saldanha Academy. He is currently completing his PhD at Stellenbosch. He has written numerous papers and published a book on the history of the South African military.
